Join award-winning author, screenwriter and director Michael Bennett in conversation with Stephanie Jones discussing his latest book 'Carved in Blood', the third instalment in the Hana Westerman crime series featuring a wahine Māori police detective. Deep dive into the next chapter of Hana's story, and a series that has captured local and international attention for its unique blend of indigenous culture, whānau and compelling cases that blur the lines between the personal and the professional for the strong woman cop caught in the middle.

Book sales provided by Poppies Howick - meet and greet the author and have your book signed after the event, or borrow a Bestie book from the Howick team.

About the books:

A chilly Auckland winter and Matariki promise new beginnings for Hana and her whānau. Her peace is shattered when her ex and the father of her daughter, Addison Jaye, is shot in a seemingly random attack, and an old undercover case starts to surface. Carved in Blood is book #3 of Bennett’s gripping Hana Westerman series begun in Better the Blood and continued in Return to Blood.

Meet the author and chair:

Michael Bennett (Ngāti Pikiao, Ngāti Whakaue) is an award-winning screenwriter, director, and author. His first book, "In Dark Places" told the true story of Teina Pora and Aotearoa’s worst miscarriage of justice and won Best Non-Fiction Book at the Ngaio Marsh Awards. "Carved in Blood" is the third book in the Hana Westerman crime series published by Simon and Schuster UK and translated into more than a dozen languages worldwide. "Better the Blood” (2022) and “Return to Blood” (2024) were both selected as We Read Auckland Bestie featured titles. TVNZ is currently developing a crime drama series based on the series, with the screenplay co-written by Bennett and Jane Holland.

Stephanie Jones is a writer and editor with a background in public relations, crisis management, magazine publishing, and journalism. She is a long-time judge of the Ngaio Marsh Award for New Zealand crime fiction and the NZ Booklovers Awards, and has reviewed books for Newstalk ZB, Coast FM, Crime Watch and NZ Booklovers. Stephanie is also the co-author, with Andrew Barnes, of The 4 Day Week: How the Flexible Work Revolution Can Increase Productivity, Profitability and Well-being, and Create a Sustainable Future.
